HISTORIC TROPICANA CABARET.  The spectacular showplace that became The Tropicana evolved out of a Depression-era bohemian nightclub called Edén Concert, operated by Cuban impresario Victor de Correa. One day, two casino operators approached de Correa about opening a combination casino and cabaret on property on the outskirts of Havana rented from Guillermina Pérez Chaumont, known as Mina.  The operators felt that the tropical gardens of her Villa Mina, would provide a lush natural setting for an outdoor cabaret.  They cut a deal, and in December of 1939, de Correa moved his company of singers, dancers and musicians into a converted mansion located on the estate. De Correa provided the food and entertainment, while Rafael Mascaro and Luis Bular operated the casino located in the chandeliered dining room of the estate’s mansion. Originally known as El Beau Site, de Correa decided to rename the club Tropicana, because of its tropical atmosphere and “na” after the last syllable of the original owner, Mina. With a fanfare from the Alfredo Brito Orchestra, the Club Tropicana, opened on December 30, 1939.  When the indoor cabaret at the air-conditioned Arcos de Cristal opened on March 15, 1952, it had a combined total seating capacity of 1,700 for the interior and outside areas with furniture designed by Charles Eames.

OLD HAVANA.  The Malecón is the avenue that runs along the seawall at the northern shore of Havana, from Habana Vieja to the Almendares River.  Castillo del Morro, picturesque fortress guarding the entrance to Havana bay. The construction of the castle Los Tres Reyes del Morro owed to the step along in Havana of the English pirate Sir Francis Drake. The king of Spain arranged its construction on a big stone which was known by the name of El Morro. He sent the field master Juan de Texeda, accompanied of the military engineer Battista Antonelli, who came to Havana in 1587 and began the task at once.  La Cabaña fortress, located on the east side of the Havana Bay. The most impressive fortress of the Spanish colony was La Cabaña.  It impresses with its XVIIIth century walls, constructed at the same time as El Morro. Every night at 9 p.m., some soldiers dressed in suits of the epoch shoot from her the “el cañonazo de las nueve”, (gunshot of the nine). It went off every day to warn of the closing of the doors of the wall that surrounded the city.  San Salvador de la Punta Fortress, In the shore opposite to the Castle of El Morro, at the beginning of the curve of El Malecon, there rises the fortress of San Salvador de la Punta, of minor architectural dimensions. It was constructed in 1590, and in 1629 the Chapter of Havana decided, to defend better the port, to join her in the night with the El Morro by using a thick chain that prevented the entry of enemy ships.  Castillo de la Real Fuerza, The fortress or Castle of the Royal Army is another big monument that closes the Plaza de las Armas. It was the first big fortification of the city, initiated in 1558 on the ruins of an ancient fortress. In the same year, the Crown sent to Cuba the engineer Bartolomé Sanchez, supervised by 14 official and main stonemasons in order to reconstruct the castle, which had been set fire and destroyed by the French corsair Jacques de Sores.  Catedral de San Cristóbal, the most prominent building on the Plaza de la Catedral. The Cathedral was raised on the chapel after 1748 by order of the bishop from  Salamanca, Jose Felipe de Trespalacios. It is one of the most beautiful and sober churches of the American baroque.  National Capitol, styled after the Panthéon (Paris), looking similar to the U.S. Capitol.  Plaza de Armas - the main touristic square. The origin of its name is military, since from the end of the XVIth century the ceremonies and the military events took place here.  Gran Teatro de la Habana, the Great Theater of Havana is famous, particularly for the acclaimed National Ballet of Cuba and its founder Alicia Alonso. It sometimes performs the National Opera. The theater is also known as concert hall, Garcia Lorca, the biggest in Cuba.  The Museum of the Revolution, located in the former Presidential Palace, with the boat Granma on display in front of the museum.  San Francisco de la Habana Basilica, Habana Vieja, The set of church and convent of San Francisco de Asis, byline of the year 1608, and it was reconstructed in 1737.

BAY OF PIGS, CIENFUEGOS.  The Bay of Pigs (Spanish: Bahía de Cochinos) is an inlet of the Gulf of Cazones on the southern coast of Cuba. By 1910, it was located in Santa Clara Province, then by 1961 in Las Villas Province, but in 1976 it was re-assigned to Cienfuegos Province, when the original six provinces were re-organized into fourteen new Provinces of Cuba.  The bay is about 30km south of Jagüey Grande, 70km west of the city of Cienfuegos, and 150km southeast from the capital city Havana.  On the western side of the bay are coral reefs bordering the main Zapata Swamp, part of the Zapata peninsula. On the eastern side are  beaches bordering margins of firm ground with mangroves and extensive swamplands to the north and east. At the north end of the bay is the village of Buena Ventura adjacent to Playa Larga (Long beach), and 35km south east of that is Playa Giron (Giron beach) at the small town of Giron, named after the notorious French pirate Gilberto Giron.  Playa Giron and Playa Larga were the landing sites for seaborne armed forces in the Bay of Pigs Invasion, a CIA-sponsored attempt to overthrow the government of Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro in April 1961.

VARADERO BEACH, CARDENAS.  Varadero is a resort town in the province of Matanzas, Cuba, and one of the largest resort areas in the Caribbean. Varadero is also called Playa Azul, which means “blue beach” in Spanish.  The foundation date of Varadero as city was only  on December 5, 1887, when ten families from the city of Cárdenas obtained a permission to build their vacation homes between today’s 42nd and 48th Street.  Varadero is foremost a tourist resort town, boasting more than 20 km of white sandy beaches. The first tourists visited Varadero as early as the 1870s, and for years it was considered an elite resort.  Tourism grew in the early 1930s as Irénée du Pont Nemours, an American millionaire, built his estate on the peninsula. Many famous and infamous people stayed in Varadero, for example Al Capone.

CASABLANCA, HAVANA.  Casablanca is a suburb of Havana, Cuba, in the municipality of Regla. It is situated to the east of the harbour entrance. In 1762, year of the capture of Havana by the English, a suburb of this name already existed. Ernesto “Che” Guevara set an example of humility by choosing to live in a house in Casablanca instead of the mansions left by the wealthy after the revolution.

VIñALES, TOBACCO HEAVEN.  Viñales is a small town and municipality in the north-central Pinar del Rio Province of Cuba.  The town consists mostly of one story wooden houses with porches.  The municipality is dominated by low mountain ranges of Cordillera de Guaniguanico such as Sierra de los Órganos.  Typical outcrops known as mogotes complete the karstic character of the landscape.  Prior to European settlement, the area had been the home of a remnant Taíno population swelled with runaway slaves.  The area was colonised at the beginning of the 1800s by tobacco growers from the Canary Islands, who settled in the Vuelta Abajo region.

EL MOJITO.  Cuba is the birthplace of the mojito, although the exact origin of this classic cocktail is the subject of debate.  The mojito was a favorite drink of author Ernest Hemingway.

Erin’s personal style is a base of Swedish with Myofacial and Deep Tissue. She is experienced in and has specialized training in several types of massage including pregnancy massage, neck and sciatic pain, and pain management associated with scoliosis or other chronic alignment issues, Swedish relaxation massage, and deep tissue massage.

There are eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga. The three that she practices and teaches are asana (poses), pranayama (controlled breathing), and pratyahara (controlling the senses). She tailors each class session to the student that is taking it so that he or she achieves the maximum benefit possible.

Nancy Gwinnell Hurd

Nancy received her BFA in Dance and her MED in Dance Education from Arizona State University. She is certified in Pilates through The Peak PilateSystem® and The PilateSystem® under Colleen Glenn. Additionally Nancy is certified in Gyrokinesis™, The Gyrotonic Expansion System®, and Pilates for Golf. She is listed in Who’s Who among America’s Teachers and is a member of The Pilates Method Alliance.

Here in Austin, Nancy has overseen both pre-training programs and internships for The PilateSystem® and The International Gyrotonic Headquarters. Currently Nancy is a Peak Pilates Certified Teacher Trainer and teaches programs in Austin and throughout the country.

Her Passion is bringing the joy and health benefits of movement to a wide variety of people. Nancy has worked with populations ranging from athletes to re-hab, youth to elders, and novice to advance. She strongly believes in the success of every “body”.

A deposit for your room reservation in full plus sales tax will be required seven days before your arrival.

If you cancel your reservation within at least seven (7) days prior to the day or your arrival NO CHARGES will be applied to your credit card.  FOR YOUR PROTECCION, CANCELLATIONS MUST BE MADE IN WRITTEN FORM SUCH AS AN EMAIL.

OUT-OF-THE-ORDINARY PROPERTY DAMAGE: Any property damage caused by a guest’s own negligence will charge to the guest credit card in order to recover the cost due to the damage caused by their own negligent behavior.

LOST KEYS, a charge of $15.00 will be assessed for any set of lost keys.

An additional $100.00 fee will be assessed to your bill for cleaning or sanitizing of rooms out of the normal room rental cleaning.
